Jeremy's journal number 6

Dear Mrs Zrihen
I currently read a non-fictional book called “Who was Albert Einstein” by Jess Brallier. This was a biography. The exposition.  Albert Einstein was a very poor student who got kicked out of school. He was one of the most brilliant people that the world has ever known. Also he was a peace-loving person who hated war, but his work led to the creation of the most destructive bomb ever. Albert was shy and hated publicity and attention, but he was a media superstar. Albert made his entrance into the world on March 14, 1879, in Ulm Germany. He certainly didn’t seem like an extraordinary child. The rising action. He was chubby and pale with thick, black hair, he was so quiet and shy that his parents worried that there was something wrong with him, (they took him to the doctors). Albert didn’t speak a word until he was 3 or 4 years old. Then suddenly he spoke something and his parents were wondering why he hasn’t talked before. Albert said, “Up to now everything has been fine”. Most boys played soldier and other rough-tougher games, but Albert just played easy board games. When Albert saw real soldiers with their blank faces they frightened him. Albert also preferred to stay by himself and day-dream . He enjoyed playing with blocks and building houses out of playing cards too. His parents started to worry about their lonely and quiet son. The doctors said he was a thinker. Albert’s father and uncle had a business that sold batteries, generators, and wire, electricity fascinated Albert. Albert pestered his father and uncle with lots of questions. Albert enjoyed thinking about a world beyond the one that could be seen or explained. As he later said, “Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world”. Albert has also been fascinated by the compass that his father had given him. No matter what he did with the compass, its needle pointed at the same direction: North, he turned the compass sideways and upside down, but nothing always the same directions. His dad explained that the earth is like a big magnet that’s always pulling on the compass’s magnetic needle. Albert was amazed that some strange and powerful force was all around him. School wasn’t teaching him about the things that mattered to him, so at age 10, Albert starting teaching himself. He was going to read as much science books as he could. Albert also liked to play the Violin , music always calmed his active mind. He especially liked to play duets with his mother. One day while they were playing, Albert suddenly realized that music cords were like patterns of numbers. Musical rhythms were like counting by threes, fours, or eights. “music’s just like numbers” he exclaimed to his mother. ( Albert was even thinking while relaxing).Later, when Albert was famous and traveled all around the world, he carried only two things with him-his suitcase and his violin. The climax. When Albert was a year old, his family moved to the city of Munich in Germany, there his sister Maja, was born. He would lie in the grass, look at the sky, and think about space. Albert found books to help him think of math and science. The falling action. He was a genius. On April 18, 1955, Albert died with a sheet of equations, and the last words on the paper was “All nations to give up on nuclear weapons”. After Albert’s death, the scientific community lost someone of a great and original mind. The resolution. Jews mourned the loss of a leader who always wished for a better and more peaceful world, even in in the darkest moments of Jewish history. Also all people mourned to the loss of a great peace-loving man     THE END

     Dear Mrs. Zrihen
I currently read a non-fictional book called “I survived the shark attacks of 1916 ”by Lauren Tarshis. This is where the exposition starts. The book is about, in July 12, 1916, at Elm hills, New Jersey in the Matawan Creek, a ten-year-old boy named Chet was swimming down in the Matawan Creek by himself, but he had the feeling that someone or something was watching him, and he saw it a big gray fin right out slicing the water towards him. As he was rushing out the water the shark was right behind him. The shark was bigger than Chet himself. The next day he got a job with his grandfather at the Elm Hills Diner. That night Chets friend Oelrichs put on his bathing suit and dove right on front of the sharks. He did that to prove that sharks don’t attack. Chet tried to make new friends because his friends were immature. They were doing a prank and pretending that there was no danger in the waters. That day Chets friends invited him to go swimming in the Creek with them, but Sid, Chets friend said in order for him to pass he had to tell the friends what the pacific ocean and Mississippi River looked alike. Here is the rising action. After he jumped and played with his friends, he saw the shark come towards his friend faster and faster closer and closer, then later BAM! The climax. Chets friend dissapeared in the water, then later Chet noticed that his two last friends died too. When he came to the top of the deck he walked up to the edge and noticed that his friends were just holding him underwater to pretend that a shark ate him. This is the falling action. The next morning when Chets brought three pins with him to kill the white shark. The resolution. When his friends came to see what he was doing they saw that he was making noise that makes sharks come just as he saw one he jumped on top and stuck all three in it, one on its tongue, the other on its back, and the other on its tail, then he realized blood coming out and that he actually killed it!!!  THE END

The genre:  non-fiction

The book is factual
The essential message is never go to a lake with sharks
The cause is going to a lake, and the effect is dying

Dear Mrs. Zrihen,
I just finished reading a fictional book called “THE EGYPT GAME” BY ZILPHA KEATLY SNYDER. This was the exposition, the book is about 3 kids named Melanie, April and Marshall (who loved to hold his toy octopus) which is April’s little brother, that go in a yard behind a shop that says “A-z Antiques, Curios, and Used Merchandise.” When they go in a yard they see a statue of Nefertiti, a women pharaoh. In the way back home they find this game board of Egypt. So they were thinking of playing the game in the back of the shop because there were used merchandise for every game level they play, but Melanie realized that there will be no room for the board, because there is so much junk, they were thinking of acting out the game. When April went home, she saw Melanie April’s best friend there watching her mom cook. “What’s going on?” April asked. “I’m eating here with you tonight” Melanie sad. That night April and Melanie were thinking about the Egypt game, to see if they thought Marshal was old enough to play. In the morning when they were at the shop, they were looking for costumes to wear at the game and old merchandise to use. After they put the merchandise at the yard they quickly ran to their houses and suddenly ran into Aprils grandma (accidently) named Caroline. This is the rising action, Caroline introduced April to Elizabeth, which is going to be a new friend of April. The next day when April and Melanie came outside and was walking to the yard, they saw Elizabeth who looked just like Nefertiti. When they went to the junkyard, since Elizabeth looked like Nefertiti, they let her be the boss. In the way back home, Elizabeth would not stop talking about the Egypt game, so the only way to get her to be quiet was to ask if she really wanted to play, and if she really wanted to, she had to stay quiet. When they came home, April’s mom asked where they were, and when Elizabeth tells her where they exactly were because she does not know that they are keeping it a secret. Melanie had to close her mouth because if her mom heard, they would be in so much trouble, “at the park” Melanie said worriedly. That night April and Melanie were thinking if they were going to let Elizabeth in the game even, the only reason they let Marshal in was because he is still a little kid and that he can trust. When they came home again April’s mom said that she hired a babysitter to watch what the kids do. The next night was Halloween night. When April and Melanie went to Elizabeth’s house, she was already in her Nefertiti dress. When they went out for trick-or-treating they saw Ken and Toby. Ken was wearing a monster costume and Toby was wearing a T.V costume. They were the mean bullies to Melanie and April. They were thinking of how they were going to the junkyard since they were in a group with a chaperon. “Wait a minute, we could sneak out by running and then hiding somewhere, like the bush or behind it!” Melanie said. So when they ran away in the opposite direction they saw a shooting star and wished for everyone not to find us, and it worked. So when they got there, they heard noise coming from the fence, and they could not believe it, it was the boys. This is the climax, “Ken, Toby what are you doing here!!” they all yelled. “Trying to see what you were up to” ken and toby said. “Are you going to tell on us now?”. “No, only if you guys let us in you’re game!”, “fine.” They said sadly. The next day Ken and Toby came up with Egyptian names for everyone, Toby was “Ramose”, Ken was “Horemheb”, Melanie was “Aida”, April was “bastet”, Elizabeth was “Nefertiti”, and marshal was “Marshamosis”. “So now if we want to send messages around in class we could Egypt form that way kids will not understand it!”. This is when the falling action starts, the next night when April and Marshal were outside in the junkyard together, something or someone suddenly grabbed April by the neck, but marshal’s saliva was stuck in his throat so he could not yell, but, when marshal was able to yell help, April was already on the ground trying to breath through her lungs. When she woke up she was at home with marshal on one side and her mom on the other trying to calm things down. When she was all calm she decided not to play the game anymore, because it was dangerous to play in the dark she thought. The resolution starts, so when it was morning she wrote to the other Egyptians that she is not playing anymore and the rest agreed because they thought it was dangerous too. Later that day, when they  came to the junkyard, they all said by to the game and went away. AND THAT’S HOW THE EGYPT GAME CAME TO BE.
The topic of the book is the Egypt game. The main idea is 3 kids finding an Egypt bored game and acting it out instead but since they were acting it out bad things were happening. The book is implied because April decided to finish early because it inferred that she almost got killed. Another title I would give it is “The strange game” because things were happening. The 3 supporting details are “kids who play a strange game”, “it’s a cliffhanger”, never get a dangerous game without a parent’s permission”. The book is factual. The essential message is to always get a game with a parent’s permission. The cause is getting a game and the effect is bad things. The problems were April almost getting killed and a cat died from Melanie. The five text feature are bolded and highlighted words, table of contents, heading, titles and sub titles, index. They help me write information about the book. 3 kids who play a game then friends come and it makes the game harder so April decided to quit. The Authors purpose is to inform about a strange and weird game. The Authors perspective is that every game should not have a big problem only a little. The author is subjective because the game is not accomplished because April quit. The Authors point of view is sad because April made the whole gang quit. The significance was that there were too much of dangerous stuff that April quit. The characters were April, Melanie, Marshal, Ken, and Toby, the protagonist were everyone, the antagonist were the parents, and the foil were the parents. The setting was at school at home and at the junkyard, the weather was rainy. The plot structure was first finding the game, then playing it , then other boys wanted to join, after was continuing the game then was April almost dead, after was April quitting. The conflict was the game (dangerous), it was internal, and character VS nature. The theme was the Egyptians. The moral was April deciding to quit or not. I would rate this book a 5 out of 5, because just because April quit the game still had a happy ending.

Dear Mrs. Zrihen
I just finished reading a fictional book called “HATCHET” BY GARY PAULSEN. The book is about a man named Brian Rebeson, who was in a plane, going to visit his dad at the Canadian wilderness. The exposition starts When he’s in a plane with a pilot, Brian realizes that the pilot gets a heart attack and dies. Brian gets worried because he does not know how to drive a plane, so when he looks for a headphone he finds one on the pilot’s head, so he carefully takes the headphone off without the pilot knowing (because he thinks that the pilot has just fainted), so when he takes off the headphone he puts it on and suddenly yells out “HELPPPP!!!!!”, “I’m in a plane with a pilot who just got a heart attack, is there anyone that can help me, please talk!!!!”. “I hear you loud and clear sir!”, “I need help please someone, tell me what to do!”. “I’m sorry, you’re breaking up, what did you say?”, “I said, I need help right away!!!!” Brian yelled aloud. “I’m sorry sir, I can’t hear you!” just when Brian was going to yell, he realizes that he has broken up completely, so he try’s to figure out which button does what, as he was doing that, he see’s the wheel and he try’s to see which way he needs to go. So when he looks at the map it shows to go 10 more miles. So here is when the rising action starts, when he tries to hold the plane still, he sees  a forest and he gets distracted by the view, when he did, the plane was out of fuel, so he crashes in the forest!!! This is where the climax is, when he crashes, in a cold lake, he feels his legs, head, arms, and stomach ach very hard. So as soon as he sleeps by a tree he thinks it will go away the next day.  When he wonders if he can drink lake water or not, he crawls to the lake and he takes only a sip to taste it, when he did he realizes, its just water, so when he was thinking about getting a drink he knows to stop by, by the lake and drink it every time he’s thirsty. The next day he realizes that the forest crash was not a dream, and his body still aching. When he looks for food he finds a whole bush of raspberries. When he was taking out more than a dozen, he finds a bear. So when the bear sniffed his mouth, it remembered that it hated raspberry’s so it ran away. When it was dinner time he got so hungry that he had to get food from a house nearby, when he came back at around 7:00pm he try’s to make a fire out of wood, the wood didn’t work, so he remembered the hatchet that his mother gave him for his birthday, that it had special wood to make fire in 5 minutes, when he tried and tried and it didn’t work,  he got very angry, that he threw it on the floor and it actually lit in fire and Brian yelled “finally victory is mine!!!”. When it became morning he was wondering why his face felt all smooth , when he looked at his reflection, he saw that his face was white from the smoke of the fire last night. When he was eating raspberry’s for breakfast again he heard a poisonous snake behind him. When he was running away he tripped, and the snake was hissing right on his eye. Before the snake bit him he stuck out some raspberry’s the snake bit it and ran away. Brian was so scared, that he fainted for 5 minutes. When he was taking a stroll around the forest, he saw a shed and moved it where he was sleeping, (now he was able to put his pills and medicine in) he thought. The falling action starts here, when he woke up, a pilot from the airport said that they will go rescue him as soon as they can, so Brian packed everything up and was ready to leave to his dad (this time) hopefully.  He does everything that he can to survive. The resolution starts here, when the plane arrived, the bear that Brian saw a few days ago was running to him to make sure he does not leave. So Brian went in fast and made it. Brian came to his dad’s house and had a nice welcome dinner. The genre of the book is fiction.  The topic is being stuck in a forest. The main idea is when he crashed in a forest with a plane and did whatever to survive before the plane came to get him. The book is stated because he arrives to his dad’s house for dinner. Another title I would give it is ‘stuck in a forest”, because he does get stuck for a few days. The 3 supporting details are “a guy getting stuck in a forest”, “it’s a cliffhanger”, “never give up in trying to escape”. The book is sensory because it explains what he sees tastes and smells. The essential message of the text is to never give up in what your doing. The cause is crashing in a forest, and the effect is trying to escape. The problem is being trapped, the places were at home and forest. The five text features are bolded and highlighted words, table of contents, headings, titles and sub titles, and maps. They help me write down information about the book .. The book is about when he is in a plane then the plane crashes and ends up in a forest and Brian does whatever he can to survive and escape. The Authors purpose is to entertain. The Authors point of view is never give up. The mood is suspense at the beginning and joy at the end because he finally arrived to his dad’s house. Also the mood is happy. The significance was Brian coming to his dad’s house finally. The characters were the pilot, Brian, a bear, and his dad. The protagonist was Brian and dad, the antagonist was a bear, and the foil was the bear. The setting was in the forest, and house, the weather was cloudy. The plot structure was in a plane, then crashing in the forest, then panicking, then shelter, then rescue. The conflict is being trapped in a forest, and its internal, and character VS nature.  The theme was a forest. The moral was deciding if he still wanted to go to his dad’s house because he was tired. The rate I would give this book is a 4 out of 5 because it was sad when he was stuck for a few days. The End

Dear Mrs. Zrihen
I just finished reading a fictional book called “SCHOOLED” BY GORDAN KORMAN. It all started when Cap had long, ungroomd hair, he wore hemp clothes, and practiced Ti chi out the lawn which was some kind of karate. He had never watched television, he had never tasted pizza, and never even heard of a wedgie because he has been home schooled. When he was reading a book while his grandmother “Rain” was picking out plums for a math problem, from his plum tree. When he realized that “Rain” has fell off of the tree, “Cap”, ( That’s a shorter name for Capricorn), is forced to go to school and learn from there. When he is called to the principles office he meets a friend named “Zack Powers”. When Zack shows cap his locker 239 he asks these questions like, “why isn’t there stuff in it?”, and “why do we even need a locker?”. This is the rising action. While Cap was asking these rhetorical questions Zack changed his mind of being his friend because Cap doesn’t know anything, so they get into this big fight of arguing about how dumb he is. At lunch the principle announced, “Attention middle school students, Capricorn has been elected as student body president”. When he hears the announcement he asks “who was that?”, “that was the speaker” Zack said. “how did you get to be elected to be student body president on the first week?”. “I don’t know”. “I don’t even know anybody’s names!”  The cause is that he has been home schooled and the effect is that he was not familiar with school and did not know what he was good at. That night when he was in school he was trying to figure out a way to erase his name from being president, when he was doing that, he got caught by the principle. The next day when Mr. Rodrigo, the principles assistant was sick, the middle school kids decided to come to see him in the hospital. When they drove him there (because he is very sick) the kids get in trouble for driving a school bus under age appropriate. When the cops come, they find out that cap was driving the bus, so he gets ARRESTED!!!!! .  This was the climax in the story. When he comes home, he found out that his teacher Mrs. Donnelly, is at his house because she is next door. She was making cupcakes for the family. When Cap asked “what was going on?” his sister Abby yells “none of you’re business!!” , and runs upstairs. When he went to the hospital to check up on Rain he finds out that the recovery was a success, when cap became happy, Rain told him that he has to stay in school for 3 more days (because she did not really finish the recovery yet she just wanted to make Cap happy). At school during first period Mrs. Donnelly finds cap tie-dying in the hallway, she asks him “why he is doing that? “This is the only thing that I learned at home when I was homeschooled and I learned a little bit of 1st grade math”. Mrs. Donnelly actually lets him do it because it was recess anyways. When he tells the whole eighth grade to participate in tie-dying everyone was happy. When they were finished everybody yelled “To Cap the greatest president ever!!”. When Cap had his very first football game he actually ran fast, the coach and his friends finally found something that he knows. This is the resolution.
The book is stated because at the end the class finds something good for Cap.  The places are in school and at home. The five text features are bolded and highlighted words, headings, titles and sub titles, table of contents, and index. The impact of it is that it made me understand the story better. The whole book is about Cap going to school and gets into a fight then the whole class try’s to find something good for Cap and they find a good one. The Authors purpose is to inform, because it is telling you about a home schooled person and what he did in school to get good education. The Authors purpose is to entertain and perspective thinks that you should be coming to school prepared with your mind set in school. The author is objective. Cap accomplishes something by figuring out what he is good at. The Authors point of view is happy because he is glad that cap found something good. . The significance of the book is at the end when the class finds something good for cap.  The irony was that he had no idea what he was good at and the significance of that was that he had to figure it out. The tone and mood was worrying at the beginning and feeling of accomplishment at the end. Also the mood of the book was happy. The characters were the teacher, Zach, Rain, and the class. The Protagonist was cap, teacher, and Rain, and the Antagonist was Zach, and the foil was Zach. The setting was at school and home, the weather was sunny, and the time was afternoon. The plot structure was first at home, then at school, then a fight, after was looking something good big fight about dumb cap, it was external, and character VS character because cap had for cap, then was found something good for cap. The conflict was a fight with Zach. The theme was working hard. The moral was deciding if cap wanted the class to find something good for him. I rate the book 4.5 out of 5 it was entertaining and kept me in suspense.

Dear Mrs. Zrihen,
I just finished reading a fictional book. This book "Crash" by Jerry Spinelli is stated, because by the end of the book it tells how everything is settled before his final football game. Also if would give it another title it would be “Crash the Awesome Football Player”, because its about practicing football and learning life lessons. It all started when Penn asks crash to his house for dinner, Crash challenges Penn and finds out that Crash beats Penn at everything. When Penn gets mad, Crash is nice enough to still come to his house.  He sees some weird things in his home like Penn does not eat meat, and he had a toy wagon. When Crash goes to school as a seventh grader he realizes that in P.E they are practicing football, a sport that Crash really loves. As he was playing football he meets another friend named Mike. They were friends for a long time and they made fool of Penn of how he is a vegetarian and his toy is a wagon. The next day, Mike and Crash saw a girl who was part of the cheerleading team. When they came up to her the bell rang and it was time for class. After class the captain of the football team told the kids their teams, when Penn asked what team he’s in the captain says he’s a cheerleader because Mike told the coach that Penn wanted to be a cheerleader. Although Crash’s grandfather gave him advice to never give up and concentrate on the game Crash still got distracted and was involved in pranks against Penn. When Crash has his game Penn wanted to join the game instead, so when he went in Crash and Mike never realized how fast he was in football. When crash came home he was wondering what that smell was, because his mom and dad was at work, so when he went in the kitchen he saw that it was his grandfather “Scooter” his grandfather making dinner.  Crash’s grandfather gave him advice about football. That night, Abby, Crash’s sister was telling Scooter about her wildlife in the backyard, because she has a mouse, and a squirrel in her backyard. In the morning, Crash had a football game ,when his grandfather told him advice about football, crash thought he was ready, but, when he was losing a little bit 20-22, he suddenly remembered the advice that his grandfather told him and it helped him beat the Hillside East 30-28. This was the climax and the resolution. When Mike was walking Crash home from school, his parents said congratulations we heard what happened on the news! The next morning when Crash was sleeping he heard a hammer going on, and it was Scooter, when he went to sleep he wondered why he no longer heard the hammer from Scooter, so when he looked outside he saw Scooter with the hammer on his head and he was not moving. The next day he had his final game, when his parents were there they wished him very good luck, so when he concentrated very hard he won the game!!!!!!The book is a cliffhanger.  Also to work hard in what sport you are doing. The book is a factual detail because it tells facts like name, numbers, and other people. The essential message of the text is to always be ready, never get distracted by bad friends or you will fail. The cause and effect of the book is Crash meeting a new friend, and the effect is Crash insulting failing as a friend and player. The problem in the story was crash meeting Mike and because of that crash can’t really focus in football. The places were at school and home. The five important things in the article is always do good in a game never give up, always meet a nice friend, always welcome a guest over, never insult someone, and always treat a first friend in a nice way. The impact for the five text features means, to try hard, have a friend don’t be lonely, have a guest for dinner, never be mean to some one, and just always have a friend the way you want to be treated. The authors purpose and perspective was to entertain. The authors perspective is that he thinks that the problems in the story, that the characters should figure out a solution to make everything better. The author is objective. The significance of the book was when crash remembered what his grandpa said and took the advice. Also the mood was happy. The text features included bolded words, heading, titles and highlighted words. This helped me to have an idea on what the book was about and what were the important points. The protagonist was Crash ,the antagonist was Mike, and the foil was Mike. The setting was at school, the weather was sunny. The plot structure started meeting Penn, then going to dinner and finding out Penn as a vegetarian, then insulting Penn, after was the big game, last was winning. The main problem was being friends with Mike, and it was external because he had a problem with somebody else too, and it was character vs character because he could not stand him. The tone was happy because he won the game, the theme was football, the moral was deciding to either be friends with Penn or Mike. I rate the book 5 of 5 because my mood at the end was great due to his accomplishment.
                                          Sincerely, your student Jeremy Kazieva
